Southern Apprentice of the Year

Southern Apprentice of the Year
We are absolutely delighted and so proud that one of apprentices, Sam, has been named the 2024 Southern Region Apprentice of the Year.
The competition, run by the Registered Master Builders, recognises excellence among carpentry apprentices. It takes a huge effort to make it through to the regional final, the competition is tough. First, Sam had to submit a written entry detailing the house he was working on - the judges were impressed by a detailed entry on an architecturally designed certified Passive House being built for the owners of Dunlop Builders! Then a practical test where the competitors had to build a bench seat under time pressure, given the plans just before they started. After this, the top 10 apprentices are interviewed by a panel, and lead them on a site visit.
The Dunlop Builders team knew Sam had what it takes, but it was special to see this acknowledged at the Master Builders Apprentice of the Year competition. The judges comments say it all "Sam’s performance in the competition was outstanding. His submission was well laid out, detailed, and reflected his strong technical knowledge. In the practical challenge, Sam showcased excellent planning skills, working smoothly and confidently. Sam's strong communication skills and willingness to learn were evident during the interview and site visit."
For taking out the top spot, Sam received tools and a $2,000 voucher from Carters Building Supplies. He also gets an annual membership to the Registered Master Builders Association, plus tickets and accommodation to the Master Builders House of the Year competition. Most incredible though is a 2 week tailored course with Outward Bound! This is an amazing opportunity to develop leadership skills, as the goal of Outward Bound is to enable people to reach their potential through challenge in the outdoors. What an incredible opportunity!
From here, Sam goes onto the National Competition in November - with a 6 hour practical test and an interview with the national judging panel.
